HOW IT WORKS

Laser Hair Removal

At Brisbane Skin and Laser we only use the latest laser technology with the Candela GentleLASE and GentleYAG Laser systems. Medical-grade laser treatment is safe and does not harm or alter the surrounding skin or tissue. These lasers apply precisely controlled pulses of energy that reach the hair follicles and disable their ability to grow. For comfortability during your treatment our laser technology has built-in cooling devices referred to as cryogen. A spray of cryogen with each laser pulse helps prevent the skin from overheating and causing hot spots.

Hair grows in cycles, laser hair removal is only effective on hair that is in the Anagen or active growth phase. About 85% of hair is in the anagen phase at any time, which is why multiple laser treatments over a period of time are required to damage and destroy all hair follicles. Your laser technician will consider your skin and hair type before creating a personalised treatment plan as the number of laser treatments is dependent upon this.

We can not guarantee that hair will not grow back after a series of laser hair removal treatments. Whilst most clients experience significant hair reduction with laser hair removal, each client’s hair growth is influenced by multiple factors, which makes predicting those clients who may not achieve significant reduction in their hair growth impossible.

Pre Treatment Instructions
- Book in for a free laser consultation with our staff to ensure that our treatments are right for you.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you may be able to have treatment from your second trimester, we ask that you consult with your doctor and provide us with a medical certificate with approval for treatment.
- You must have no active herpes simplex. Prepare 72 hours prior to the treatment with antiviral medication if needed.
- Advise your therapist of recent antibiotic use.
- Advise your therapist of any acne medication use within the last 12 months.
- Advise your therapist if you have an active cold sore or are prone to cold sores.
- Avoid prescription retinoids/Vitamin A for 2 weeks prior to your treatment.
- Avoid cosmetic injectable treatments for 2 weeks prior to your treatment.
- No sun exposure, no fake tan, no gradual tan in the treatment area within 2 weeks of treatment.
- Do not wax, pluck/tweeze the hair or use depilatory cream in the area within 2 weeks of the treatment.
- Shave the treatment area within 12-24 hours of your appointment.
- Avoid the use of topical skin solutions including moisturiser and perfume on the areas being treated on the day of your appointment.
What to expect immediately post treatment
- Possible redness and follicular swelling in the area.
- Hairs do not fall out immediately but you will shed them over a period of days to weeks.
Post Treatment Instructions
- Avoid tight, restrictive clothing.
- Soothe sensitivity by applying Skinstitut Laser Aid, apply this for 5 days post treatment, morning and night.
- For 24 hours post treatment, avoid shaving, waxing or plucking hairs, exfoliation, excessive sweating, exercising, saunas, hot showers and swimming pools.
- Continue use of active ingredients 5-7 days post treatment.
- Exfoliate the area from day 7, to encourage hair to fall out of the follicle and to avoid ingrown hairs.
- Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks post treatment, apply recommended SPF regularly.
- Shave as often as needed, do not wax or pluck the hairs.
- Take home products include, Skinstitut Laser Aid, Gentle Cleanser and Glycolic Scrub. If you are a darker skin type, we ask that you also take home Skinstitut Even Blend Serum to prevent any unwanted darkening of the treated areas.

How long does this treatment take?

Depending on the area being treated, treatment time can be as little as 15 minutes.
How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required varies for each client. It depends on your hair and skin type and the area being treated. However, we normally suggest 10-12 sessions with maintenance to ensure a good result. Treatments are normally 4 – 6 weeks apart, however, this can increase as you are further into your treatments and seeing less and less hair regrowth. Every body part has a different hair growth cycle so results will vary depending on the stage your hair follicles are in at the time of treatment.
Does laser hair removal hurt?

You may experience minimal discomfort with laser hair removal, especially when compared with alternatives, such as waxing. After each treatment, the hair becomes thinner and discomfort is decreased further. You will feel a slight tingling on most areas being treated, particularly on sensitive areas the feeling can be compared to being flicked with a rubber band. TIP: To reduce discomfort, ensure you have shaved well. Sometimes you can also be more sensitive if you are hormonal.
Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal is one of the most effective and affordable hair removal options available. We aim for an 80% permanent hair growth reduction. Results will vary from client to client and there are many factors that come into this.
Can I have this treatment if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Our recommendation is to avoid Laser Hair Removal for at least the first trimester. From the second trimester onwards, after consultation with your doctor and an approval letter we are able to treat you. We cannot guarantee any result as your body is going through many hormonal changes, there are many other factors that may impact your treatment.
